Nearly one in four women with urinary tract infections (UTIs) during pregnancy may not fill their antibiotic prescriptions, and approximately 3% of cases of mental retardation may be attributable to untreated UTIs.
These findings were presented by Dr. Suzanne McDermott, with the University of South Carolina, here Thursday at the First annual Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Conference on Birth Defects, Developmental Disabilities, and Disability and Health.
Dr. McDermott and colleagues analyzed the relationship between the trimester of fetal exposure to maternal UTIs, with or without antibiotic treatment, and the occurrence of mental retardation and fetal death.
