Escherichia coli isolates from female urinary tract infections in the US have demonstrated a stepwise, greater than three-fold increase in resistance to ciprofloxacin since 1995, researchers at Focus Technologies, Inc. report.
Focus Technologies’ Surveillance Network Database-USA maintains data from a network of hospitals nationwide. In 1995, a total of 43 laboratories participated. This figure grew to 232 in 1999 and 270 in 2001, Dr. James A. Karlowsky, in Herndon, Virginia, and colleagues report in the August issue of Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy.
The scientists analyzed antimicrobial susceptibility testing results of E. coli isolates from clean catch urine samples from female outpatients using data from the Surveillance Network.
