In patients with passive fecal incontinence due to internal anal sphincter weakness, trans-sphincteric injection of a silicone biomaterial can markedly improve symptoms, British investigators report.
Dr. M. A. Kamm and colleagues of St. Mark’s Hospital in London selected six patients for the pilot study they describe in the August 22nd issue of Gut. Incontinence was “severe enough that the patient would consider a colostomy,” the investigators note, and had not responded to antidiarrheal agents or biofeedback therapy
