Combining an angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor and an angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB) reduces urinary protein excretion more than does the ACE inhibitor alone.
John Panos, MD, and colleagues, at Lenox Hill Hospital, New York, New York, undertook a trial of 10 patients to determine whether adding an ARB to an ACE inhibitor reduces urinary protein excretion further.
They presented results of the protocol here at the 35th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Nephrology. All of the participants had significant proteinuria (range, 517 – 8562 mg/24 hours) despite administration of an ACE inhibitor for at least four weeks. After baseline measurements were taken, losartan (50 mg/day) was started and testing repeated at one month.
