Plasma concentrations of the endogenous nitric oxide synthase inhibitor asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) increase with age but the increase is more significant among elderly patients with essential hypertension, an increase that also correlates with reduced renal perfusion.
Speaking here September 25th at the 56th Annual Fall Conference and Scientific Sessions of the American Heart Association’s Council for High Blood Pressure Research (AHA-CHBP), Jan Kielstein, PhD, from the Medical School of Hannover, in Hannover, Germany, explained that reduced availability of nitric oxide is thought to contribute to the age-associated increase of renovascular tone and blood pressure. The link between ADMA and renal haemodynamics changes in the elderly has not, however, been elucidated so far.
