Intravenous Iron Sucrose Safe as Two Minute Bolus Injection

Intravenous iron sucrose can be administered safely as a two minute bolus injection, the ease, researchers report.

The practicality of administration of a bolus injection over two minutes allows intravenous iron sucrose to be given immediately in an outpatient setting, according to research presented here July 16th at the XXXIX Congress of the European Renal Association, European Dialysis and Transplant Association (ERA-EDTA). Administration of intravenous iron therapy to renal patients has traditionally involved time-consuming infusions.

The rationale behind the study was mainly time based. The researchers, from the Department of Renal Medicine, King’s College Hospital, London, United Kingdom, proposed that a 200 mg iron sucrose push over two minutes would result in considerable time savings both in nurse time and in infusion time. The clinical impact of this audit has resulted in a change in practice, said lead researcher Dr. Alison Monk.
