Coronary heart disease (CHD) in haemodialysis patients may be associated with mean platelet volume (MPV), say German researchers. While MPV is a myocardial infarction risk factor in the general population, it was not known whether it is related to CHD in chronic haemodialysis treatment patients.
In this cross sectional study by investigators at Ruhr-Universität Bochum, Herne, Germany, 518 such patients were diagnosed with CHD if they had a history of myocardial infarction, coronary artery bypass grafting, or critical stenosis on coronary angiography.
Haemodialysis subjects had a mean platelet volume of 8.22 fl.
Significantly more haemodialysis patients with a MPV greater than 9.172 fl, the upper quintile limit, were found to have CHD than those in the lower quintile limit with a MPV less than 7.168 fl.
