NEW YORK (Reuters Health) May 17 –
A renal tubule cell assist device containing human cells has been successfully used to replace kidney function in acutely uremic dogs, researchers report in the May issue of the American Journal of Kidney Diseases.
“Patients in acute renal failure die as a result of shock-like symptoms, usually brought on by sepsis,” lead author Dr. H. David Humes told Reuters Health. “We think these cells are a key to preventing that from happening. If we’re right, that changes some fundamental understandings of how the kidney works and opens up the way to other new therapies.”
