NEW YORK (Reuters Health) May 02 – Analysis of renal epithelial cells from HIV-1-positive patients with HIV-associated nephropathy indicates that HIV-1 replication occurs locally in renal epithelium, which appears to be a reservoir for the virus, according to a report in the May issue of Nature Medicine.
Dr. Daniele Marras, from Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York, and colleagues have previously shown that HIV-1 gag and nef mRNA are present in the epithelial cells of patients with HIV-1-associated nephropathy. In their current study, the investigators continued their research using HIV-infected renal cells from two patients with HIV-associated nephropathy.
