A number of recent studies have suggested that atorvastatin could reduce serum uric acid levels[1-3]. It is well known, however, that statins exert a beneficial effect on endothelial vasomotor function[4,5]. In fact, better perfusion of the myocardium and improved coronary blood flow have been documented soon after starting statin treatment[4-6]. Therefore an increase in renal blood flow is a possibility. In this way statin-induced renal vasodilation could be responsible for their hypouricaemic effect. If this were the case, a concomitant decrease in serum creatinine would be anticipated.
