Episodes of renal colic in men and women occur in a circadian pattern and generally peak in the morning.
Although there is anecdotal evidence that people are more at risk of renal colic during the night, this hypothesis has never been investigated, according to Dr Roberto Manfredini and colleagues at the Department of Internal Medicine, University of Ferrara Medical School, Ferrara, Italy.
As several studies have shown a circadian variation for other acute diseases, the clinicians investigated whether renal colic occurred in a circadian pattern.
