Findings from a small case series in the Netherlands suggest that locally acquired hepatitis E virus (HEV) infections may be overlooked in industrialized countries. Such infections should be ruled out before initiating treatment for presumed autoimmune hepatitis, researchers note.
HEV is known to be a major cause of enterically transmitted non-A, non-B hepatitis in developing countries, lead author Dr. Marc-Alain Widdowson, from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, and colleagues note. In contrast, HEV is thought to be a relatively uncommon cause of hepatitis in industrialized countries.
