Compared with the beta-blocker atenolol, the calcium antagonist lacidipine significantly slows the progression of asymptomatic carotid atherosclerosis, according to the results of a randomized trial.
Dr. Alberto Zanchetti from the University of Milan, Italy, and colleagues from the European Lacidipine Study on Atherosclerosis (ELSA) randomly assigned 2334 hypertensive patients to 4 years of treatment with lacidipine or atenolol. The researchers compared the intima-media thickness of the common carotids and bifurcations at baseline and at 4 years.
