VA Pittsburgh leads $17 million study of renal failure

The VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System was awarded a $16.8 million federal grant to lead a study of acute renal failure.

The study, which will be known as the Acute Renal Failure Trial Network Study, will include 24 Veterans Administration health care sites and seven others from outside the VA system. Dr. Paul Palevsky, chief of the renal section at the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System, will serve as chairman of and oversee the 38-month-long study.

Acute renal failure is the abrupt loss of kidney function resulting in the body’s failure to excrete various waste products. Several conditions, including low blood pressure and severe infections, can lead to acute renal failure.
