Laparoscopic radical nephroureterectomy, a minimally invasive surgery, appears to be an effective way of managing upper tract transitional cell carcinoma in select patients. In a multicentre study led by Hazem Abou El Fettouh from the Cleveland Clinic Urological Institute, Cleveland, Ohio, United States, 116 patients with upper tract transitional cell carcinoma underwent laparoscopic radical nephroureterectomy at one of five medical institutions.
Fifty one surgeries were performed transperitoneally and 65 were performed retroperitoneally. The primary tumour was pelvicalyceal in 70 patients, ureteral in 27 and multifocal in 19. Eighteen patients underwent a concomitant transurethral resection to remove a bladder tumour.
