The effect of posture on renal function in patients with preascitic cirrhosis appears to be linked to loss of tubuloglomerular feedback, Italian researchers report in the November issue of Gut.
In fact, lead investigator Dr. Giovanni Sansoe told Reuters Health that he and his colleagues are convinced that the findings “can provide the definitive answer” to the question of why a cirrhotic man “retains sodium and water while standing and shows an exaggerated natriuresis while studied during prolonged reclining.”
To investigate the mechanisms behind these states, Dr. Sansoe of Gradenigo Hospital, Turin, and colleagues studied 10 patients with preascitic liver cirrhosis and 10 healthy controls.
