Inhaled corticosteroids are probably safe to use in pregnant women with newly diagnosed asthma.
This finding was reported September 15th by Dr. Martin Silverman of the University of Leicester, in the United Kingdom, at the 12th Annual Meeting of the European Respiratory Society (ERS).
The information is important for pregnant women with asthma and the physicians who are treating them, because until now, corticosteroids have been classified as Class III teratogens-meaning there is a possible though unknown risk of birth defects to the developing fetus.
