A three-dose regimen of recombinant hepatitis B vaccine is immunogenic in most children with chronic renal failure (CRF), but it is most effective when given before renal transplant, according to a report in the August issue of the American Journal of Kidney Diseases.
Adults with CRF require higher doses of hepatitis B vaccine to induce a suitable antibody response, the authors explain, but whether a similar approach should be used in children has not been determined.
