Nadir PSA predicts progression to hormone refractory prostate cancer

The nadir prostate specific antigen (PSA) level is the most accurate predictor of progression to hormone refractory prostate cancer following hormone therapy, according to research from South Korea.

A variety of PSA indices exist and it is acknowledged that they play an important role in the diagnosis of prostate cancer. However, there is disagreement as to their prognostic importance after hormone treatment.

Few studies have addressed the question of whether PSA levels can predict progression to cancer that is resistant to hormonal therapy in patients who have been treated with hormone therapy.

Dr Cheol Kwak and colleagues at the Seoul University College of Medicine reviewed the progressive status and survival of 177 patients with stage C and D prostate cancer. Overall survival rate, incidence of progression to the refractory stage following hormone treatment and the time taken for this to occur were analysed.
