Leaving a Ureteral Stump after Heminephrectomy Acceptable to Correct Congenital Duplex Kidneys

 Leaving a ureteral stump after lower-pole heminephrectomy for the treatment of congenital duplication of the ureter and renal pelvis appears to be an acceptable clinical practice.

Most patients will not require later resection of the stump. Researchers led by D. Caluwe from the Children’s Research Centre, Our Lady’s Hospital for Sick Children, Dublin, Ireland examined the medical records of 19 children who had undergone 20 lower-pole heminephrectomies between 1990 and 2000. The patients ranged in age from one month to 12 years at the time of surgery. The median age was four-and-a-half years.
