The presence of cytokeratin-positive (CK+) cells in the bone marrow after local radiation therapy of prostate cancer indicates an increased risk of developing distant metastases, according to a report in the January 1 International Journal of Cancer.
The presence of CK+ cells, considered to be an indicator of micrometastases, is a poor prognostic factor in surgically treated localized prostate cancer, the authors explain, but their significance has not been investigated in patients undergoing definitive radiotherapy for prostate cancer.
