Human spermatogonial stem cells transplanted into immunodeficient mice can survive up to 6 months, according to a report published in the December issue of Fertility and Sterility.
The research could lead to new sperm salvage methods for men whose sperm production is endangered by radiation or chemotherapy. Clinical trials of this approach have already begun in humans, so learning more about the basics of how human sperm stem cells survive is “critically important,” study author Dr. Ralph L. Brinster and colleagues, from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, note.
