Federal health officials from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) want physicians to be aware that medications prepared by a compounding pharmacy may be a source of infection in patients receiving epidural or intra-articular injections.
In the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report December 13th, Dr. Dan Jernigan, medical epidemiologist at CDC and colleagues describe 5 cases of fungal infection due to Exophiala (Wangiella) dermatitidis associated with contaminated injectable methylprednisolone prepared at a compounding pharmacy in North Carolina.
