Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors reduce mortality among chronic hemodialysis patients, independent of an antihypertensive effect, according to a report in the November issue of the American Journal of Kidney Diseases.
“Cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of death in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD),” Dr. Shai Efrati and colleagues from Tel-Aviv University, Israel, note. “Hypertension is a major risk factor for cardiovascular complications in these patients,” they add. “ACE inhibitors are an effective treatment for hypertension in patients with ESRD and are known to improve prognosis in patients with chronic renal failure.”
