Robot-assisted prostatectomy (RAP) may be as good or better than the standard procedure, radical retropubic prostatectomy (RRP), according to the results of a study published in the November issue of Urology.
“RRP is the unquestioned standard for the surgical treatment of localized prostate cancer. However, attempts are being made to duplicate the outcomes of RRP with less invasive surgical techniques,” write Mani Menon, MD, and colleagues from Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan. “Robotic assistance may enhance the precision of anatomic dissection and increase the feasibility of performing laparoscopic radical prostatectomy for most surgeons.”
