German doctors are being urged to improve hygiene standards after a study revealed that just one in three endoscopes used by practice-based general practitioners and specialists in the southern state of Bavaria were completely sterile.
A project conducted by the Bavarian Association of Health Insurance Doctors (KVB) examined endoscopes in 577 practices of GPs, internists, urologists and surgeons–around a quarter of all those in the state that use the instrument.
