The relatively low specificity of free PSA testing may be improved by testing for a subform of PSA known as intact PSA, according to a report published in the November issue of The Journal of Urology. Measuring free PSA levels is a widely used screening method for prostate cancer.
Unfortunately, elevated free PSA levels are not limited to malignant disease, but can also occur with benign conditions, such as benign prostate hyperplasia. The inability to characterize the disease means that many men with benign conditions undergo biopsies that could have possibly been avoided, the investigators point out.
