In hemodialysis patients with pre-existing left ventricular hypertrophy, creation of an arteriovenous access is associated with further progression of the condition, researchers conclude in a report published in the October issue of the American Journal of Kidney Diseases.
Dr. Uzi Gafter, of Rabin Medical Center, Petah-Tikva, Israel, and colleagues note that about 70% of predialysis renal patients have left ventricular hypertrophy. The researchers have previously shown that shortly after creation of an arteriovenous access, cardiac output increases and systemic vascular resistance decreases.
