Gas Exchange Can Measure Anaerobic Threshold in Cystic Fibrosis

Measuring gas exchange during exercise offers an unbiased, reproducible estimate of the lactate–and, therefore, anaerobic–threshold in patients suffering from cystic fibrosis. Usually, researchers determine the anaerobic threshold by measuring blood concentrations of lactate during incremental exercise tests.

Based on this, researchers calculate the lactate threshold, from which they derive, in turn, the anaerobic threshold. However, measuring gas exchange during the incremental exercise test offers a non-invasive assessment of the lactate– and, therefore, anaerobic–threshold. Against this background, researchers from University College and St Vincent’s University Hospital, Dublin, Ireland, estimated the gas exchange and lactate thresholds in 23 patients suffering from cystic fibrosis of varying severity.

The forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) varied between 23 and 118 percent of predicted among patients with cystic fibrosis. Researchers compared the thresholds in cystic fibrosis patients to those from 18 controls.
