Changes in bronchial eosinophils and lung function during steroid therapy are closely related in patients with atopic asthma, although they do not occur simultaneously.
Corticosteroid therapy for asthma improves lung function and reduces airway inflammation but the relationship between the two has been unclear say investigators from Stanford University in Stanford, California; James Connelly Memorial Hospital in Dublin, Ireland and Royal Free Hospital in London, England.
They examined the associations during high-dose inhaled corticosteroid therapy in nine patients with atopic asthma. Participants received 2,000 µg per day of inhaled fluticasone propionate for eight weeks. They underwent fiber optic bronchoscopy with endobronchial biopsies, spirometry and histamine provocation challenge at baseline, after two weeks and at the end of eight weeks.
