ידוע שאצל ילדים אשר נולדו לאמהות הסובלות מדיכאון הסיכון לחלות במחלה זו גבוה יותר. יחד עם זאת, מעט ידוע על עוצמת סיכון זה ועל היבטים קליניים נוספים.

ממחקר חדש, שבוצע ע”י חוקרות אמריקניות Constance Hammen מ- University of California, Los Angeles ו-Patricia Brennan מ- Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia עולה, כי בהחלט קיים קשר בין דיכאון של אמהות וילדיהן, והסיכון הוא אף כפול בילדים לאמהות מדוכאות בזמן ממושך.

במהלך המחקר (גדול מימדים במיוחד ה’ ע’), החוקרות ערכו השוואה לגבי שכיחות המקרים של דיכאון מאובחן בילדים לאמהות מדוכאות ולא מדוכאות. כ20 אחוז מהילדים לאמהות מדוכאות סבלו אף הם מסימני דיכאון. בנוסף, ילדים אלו היו בעלי סיכון גבוה יותר להפרעות נפשיות נוספות כגון פחדים וחרדה.

תוצאות המחקר העידו על כך כי חומרת הדיכאון האמהי מהווה גורם מנבא מובהק יותר מאשר משך ההפרעה, גם לאחר התאמה סטטיסטית לגורמים מבלבלים (confounding factors) כגון מצב כלכלי וחברתי, מין הילוד וכו’.

כמו כן מצאו החוקרות כי תקופה של דיכאון מג’ורי של עד חודשיים מעלה את הסיכון לדיכאון אצל הילד כמו תקופה של דיכאון קל במשך כשנה.

במאמרן, אשר התפרסם בגיליון האחרון של Archives of General Psychiatry החוקרות מציינות, ש”כעת אפשר להרגיע נשים אשר סובלות מתקופה קצרה יחסי של דיכאון קל”, כאשר, לדעתן, “אין חשיבות בתיזמון תקופה דיכאוניות ואין הבדל משמעותי בין הקבוצות “.

הערת העורך חשיבות מחקר זה היא קודם כל בהבהרות ובמתן משמעות מדעית ל”תחושות” קליניות וניסיון פרקטי של אנשי מיקצוע פסיכיאטרים, רופאי-ילדים ורופאי-משפחה. זיהוי קבוצות פגיעות יותר מבחינה נפשית ומתן קרקע מדעית הם שלבים ראשונים בתחילת התהליך של איבחון מוקדם, טיפול ומניעת הדיכאון ביעילות ומכוונוים באופן דיפרנציאטלי לקבוצות אוכלוסיה שונות, עונים לצרכיהם הספציפיים, מקטינים הוצאות מיותרות ומעלים את מודעות הציבור המעורב בתהליך.
