Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) was effective in treating patients with medication-resistant auditory hallucinations, according to a report published in the January issue of the Archives of General Psychiatry.
“Neuroimaging studies suggest that auditory hallucinations of speech arise, at least in part, from activation of brain areas underlying speech perception,” write Ralph E. Hoffman, MD, from Yale University School of Medicine in New Haven, Connecticut, and colleagues. “One-hertz rTMS produces sustained reductions in cortical activation.”
