Dopamine Receptor-Interacting Protein Elevated in Schizophrenic and Bipolar Patients

Patients with schizophrenia or bipolar disorder have significantly elevated levels of the neuronal calcium sensor protein-1 (NCS-1), according to a report in the PNAS Early Edition for the week of December 16th. The authors suggest that this finding supports the hypothesis that multiple dopamine receptor-interacting proteins have a role in both diseases.

“It has been known for a while that dopamine is involved in schizophrenia,” principal investigator Dr. Michael S. Lidow, from the University of Maryland, Baltimore, told Reuters Health. However, the particular dopamine dysfunction involved has not been found. “We decided to look at a group of dopamine receptors as the possible site of dopamine dysfunction,” he said.
