Individuals with a history of alcohol dependence appear to be at increased risk of a major depressive disorder, even after abstinence from alcohol, researchers report.
Dr. Deborah S. Hasin from Columbia University, New York, and Dr. Bridget F. Grant from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, Bethesda, Maryland, collected data on 6050 former drinkers. These subjects had not smoked or used drugs in the past year.
