Lesions in the white and grey matter of the brains of the elderly appear to be linked to geriatric depression.
Larry A. Tupler, PhD, at the Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina, United States, and colleagues investigated whether lesions in white or gray matter of the brain were more common among elderly depressives than nondepressed controls.
“Evidence is mounting linking cerebrovascular disease with the development of major depression in the elderly,” the researchers explained.
“Lesions in both white and grey matter have been associated with geriatric depression. In addition, the literature on post-stroke depression suggests that left-sided lesions are associated with depression.”
To further investigate the association, the researchers used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to examine the location and severity of white and grey matter lesions in a group of 115 elderly depressives and 37 nondepressed controls.
