Confirming studies of preschoolers and young elementary schoolchildren, 11-year-old children who had low birthweight are more likely to have behavioral problems and psychiatric disorders than those born at normal weight.
This is true of “even the heavy low birthweighter, up to 2000 grams,” Dr. Irene Elgen, a research fellow at the University of Bergen in Norway, told Reuters Health. She and colleagues at the university report their findings in the September issue of Archives of Disease in Childhood, Fetal and Neonatal Edition.
