In a series of animal and human experiments, researchers have found a link between abnormalities in sphingolipid and cholesterol metabolism and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), according to a report in the September issue of the Annals of Neurology.
“We found that antioxidants and drugs that inhibit the accumulation of ceramide and cholesterol can protect cultured spinal cord nerve cells against degeneration, suggesting that it may be possible to develop new approaches for preventing and treating this devastating disease,” Dr. Mattson said.
