Individuals with epilepsy are more likely to suffer from fractures of the extremities than the general population. The risk of fracture is highest among males over age 45 with generalized seizures who are within the first couple of years of diagnosis.
Researchers led by Hakan B. I. Persson from the Departments of Clinical Neuroscience, Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden, identified the proportion of 117 consecutive adult patients with epilepsy attending the outpatient clinic at the neurology department of the Karolinska Institutet in 1995 who also visited the emergency department for an extremity fracture between 1991 and 1995.
They compared these results to the number of expected extremity fractures in the general population based on regional fracture rates. From 1991 to 1995, 20 (11 percent) of the 117 patients with epilepsy sustained 23 extremity fractures that prompted a visit to the emergency department.
