Britain’s Alzheimer’s Society said on Monday that patients with early symptoms of dementia are at risk because carers are too frightened to take them to a doctor to have the diagnosis confirmed.
The charity said research findings showed half of all carers delay visiting general practitioners after first noticing something was wrong. The average delay was 3 years.
The research covered 40 practices and 120 doctors, 80 nurses, 220 people with dementia and 110 carers.
“Three years is far too long for someone to wait,” Dr. Murna Downs, one of the researchers, from the University of Bradford’s Dementia Group, said in a statement.
