Platelet activation and/or reactivity could be one reason depressed patients face a higher risk of cardiovascular disease.
Increased platelet activation seen in patients with major depression is similar to alterations observed in patients with thoracic aortic atherosclerosis, say researchers from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, United States.
“These findings provide further evidence for either increased platelet activation and/or intrinsic heightened platelet reactivity as one of the biological substrates underlying the increased risk of depressed patients for cardiovascular disease.”
They suggest future studies are needed to determine whether the magnitude of platelet stimulation and secretion in patients with both depression and atherosclerotic aortic disease is greater than that seen in non-depressed atherosclerotic aortic patients or patients with major depression alone.
