NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Mar 28 – Cognitive, behavioral, and functional status is likely to be poor in older subjects with low endogenous estradiol (E2) levels, according to a report in the March issue of the Archives of Neurology.
Dr. Jeffrey L. Cummings, of the University of California, Los Angeles, and colleagues examined the association between E2 levels and cognition and behavior in elderly men and women in Bangkok. Of the subjects, who ranged in age from 52 to 85 years, 72 had dementia and 63 did not. Only four women had ever used estrogen replacement therapy, and they had stopped more than 5 years prior to the study.
