Physicians should look out for patients with partial epilepsy whose impaired cognition and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) are unrelated to their disease history or dosage of carbamazepine (CBZ) monotherapy.
A team of investigators from specialist departments in The Netherlands tested 56 outpatients with relatively well controlled partial epilepsy without symptomatic aetiology to assess attention, memory, information processing and executive functioning.
This group of 29 males and 27 females on CBZ, mean age 41.3 years, were compared with a control group of 56 healthy people matched for age, gender and education.
