NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Mar 21 – The muscle-relaxing drug baclofen can rapidly cut severe withdrawal symptoms in alcoholics trying to achieve abstinence, according to the results of a small pilot study.
Italian researchers found that baclofen treatment eliminated withdrawal symptoms in five patients–within hours in four cases and by day 3 in the fifth. All five were trying to maintain abstinence from alcohol but were suffering from severe withdrawal symptoms such as tremor, sweating, nausea and agitation.
