NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Feb 28 – Old microbleeds, detected by T2*-weighted gradient-echo MRI, are a significant, independent predictor of cerebral bleeding in patients presenting with acute ischemic stroke, French investigators have found.
T2*-wieghted MRI, and to a less extent T2-weighted MRI, takes advantage of the deoxygenation that hemoglobin undergoes during extravasation into brain tissue, Dr. Norbert Nighoghossian, of the H pital Neurologique in Lyon, and colleagues explain in the March issue of Stroke: Journal of the American Heart Association.
