A French study of HIV-infected patients with documented zidovudine resistance mutations shows that continued treatment with the drug in a highly active antiretroviral therapy regimen can result in a sustained and durable virologic response.
Dr. Diane Descamps of the Hopital Bichat-Claude Bernard in Paris and colleagues studied 155 patients who had previously been treated with zidovudine, didanosine or zalcitabine. All had at least one zidovudine resistance mutation and 123 had two or more zidovudine resistance mutations. The number of resistance mutations correlated with the length of prior antiviral treatment.
