Results of a new study show that statin therapy affects cerebral cholesterol metabolism, but at clinically relevant doses statins do not alter the production of the amyloid-beta peptide implicated in Alzheimer’s disease.
In a case-control study, Dr. Klaus Fassbender from the University of Goettingen, Germany, and colleagues studied 50 patients with hypercholesterolemia receiving statin therapy. They also studied 50 normocholesterolemic patients and 50 untreated hypercholesterolemic patients. All the subjects were older than 50 years and dementia-free.
