(Reuters Health) Oct 07 –
Opioid analgesics are an effective treatment for some cases of postherpetic neuralgia and do not appear to impair cognitive function, according to a report published in the October 8th issue of Neurology.
Tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs) are often used to treat postherpetic neuralgia, but fail to provide at least moderate pain relief in about half of patients, the authors point out. The usefulness of opioid analgesics for neuropathic pain, such as postherpetic neuralgia, has been debated, but such drugs have never been compared with TCAs in a single trial.
