Aspirin May Negate the Benefits of ACE Inhibitors

Although aspirin (ASA) and angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors have been shown to reduce ischemic events after myocardial infarction (MI), ASA may attenuate the beneficial effects of ACE inhibitors among patients with CAD or left-ventricular dysfunction. The findings, from the Coumadin Aspirin Reinfarction Study, were presented here at this year’s meeting of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) annual meeting. Dr. Benjamin H. Trichon, of Duke University Medical Center, in Durham, North Carolina, United States, and colleagues examined the relationship between the combined use of ACE inhibitors and ASA and clinical outcomes after MI.
