WASHINGTON (Reuters Health) Aug 14 – US healthcare officials are planning to reassess the benefits of combination hormone replacement therapies containing estrogen in response to a recent US government-sponsored study that revealed potentially serious side effects in postmenopausal women.
Performed as part of the government’s Women’s Health Initiative, the study was halted 3 years earlier than planned because of emerging evidence showing small yet statistically significant increases in the risk of heart disease, breast cancer, stroke and blood clots.
