EULAR: Celebrex (Celecoxib) Less Likely to Destabilize Controlled Hypertension than Other NSAIDs

STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN — June 17, 2002 —

Celecoxib (Celebrex®) appears to be less likely to destabilize controlled hypertension than other commonly prescribed non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), according to a study presented here this week at the Annual European Congress of Rheumatology (EULAR).

Dr. Thomas Burke from Global Health Outcomes, Pharmacia, Peapack, United States, and colleagues used the LifeLink® employer-based claims database to identify patients newly treated with rofecoxib, celecoxib, ibuprofen, diclofenac, or naproxen between June 1999 and June 2000 and who had stable antihypertensive therapy in the three months prior to initiation of any of these drugs.

They identified 20,915 patients who were treated with celecoxib, 12,952 with rofecoxib, 10,789 with ibuprofen, 1,900 with diclofenac, and 8,840 with naproxen. Among these patients, those prescribed COX-2 inhibitors compared to traditional NSAIDs were more likely to be older and have a history of cardiovascular and renal disease. They were also more likely to use healthcare facilities prior to use of an NSAID.
